The Moon continues its transit of Virgo all day, and pouring some of our energy into detailed work may be appropriate. With Venus conjunct Juno, we seek equal, fair, and balanced connections. There can be a stronger inclination towards togetherness and sharing, creating harmony, and sharing power. We may gain an advantage in business or finances or by promoting peace. Mercury and Jupiter head toward a trine, exact very early tomorrow but in very strong influence today. This transit first occurred on September 20th, and while Mercury was retrograde, it happened again on October 3rd. Now, we’re arriving at some helpful conclusions, or information unblocks so we can make a decision. This transit boosts our optimism and faith. We might gain a positive outlook through conversations and a sense of hope or trust in the future. Big-picture thinking benefits us. We are seeking a little extra meaning to our projects and experiences. Our ideas are big, and our intentions noble. We might receive good news or offers now. Curiosity is stimulated.

The NEW MOON occurs on Thursday, November 4th, 2021, at 5:14 PM EDT.

On Thursday afternoon, the New Moon occurs in the sign of Scorpio, marking the beginning of a new cycle. It presents an opportune time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Scorpion.

The weeks ahead of this New Moon are good for focusing on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Scorpion–passionate, resourceful, focused, probing, deep, and perceptive–and consider how to positively develop and incorporate these qualities into our lives.

Scorpio New Moons are especially suitable for working on our self-mastery skills. We may want to pinpoint those things that make us feel out of control, such as addictions and debts, and work on freeing ourselves of these emotional burdens.

This New Moon cycle is also opportune for exploring what is missing in our lives that leads us to engage in these self-destructive behaviors.

This cycle represents an opportunity to rid ourselves of “junk” in our lives–material and spiritual. With this potent Scorpio energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives.

Each sign teaches us valuable things, and one of Scorpio’s “lessons” involves learning to dig deeper into the mysteries around us instead of always being content with the status quo.

Taking the time to understand others’ motives can enrich our feelings of intimacy, forgiveness, and meaning.

Scorpio also teaches us that dedication to one meaningful relationship or undertaking can be significantly more satisfying than spreading ourselves around. Here, “quality over quantity” applies.

We might want to use this cycle to focus on and develop one special project or relationship to help add purposefulness and depth to our lives.

It can also be a time to seek ways to release our fear of confrontations and heavy emotional situations. We’re discovering that although they may be uncomfortable, these situations can lead us toward psychological healing.

This lunation is tightly opposite Uranus, and it’s also square Saturn. Intimate relationships need a new approach, and we can see this more clearly now, but our interactions can be counterproductive if we’re functioning on auto-pilot.

We instinctively gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In order to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead. 　

The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.

This week: The Sun is in Scorpio; Mercury is in Libra until November 5th, after which Mercury is in Scorpio; Venus is in Sagittarius until November 5th, after which it’s in Capricorn; Mars is in Scorpio.

The Sun is in Scorpio from October 23-November 21. The guiding principle of Scorpio is “I desire.” Scorpio is the sign of depth, intimacy, and extremes of feeling. Superficiality simply will not do with the Sun in Scorpio–we want to get to the bottom of matters. Mediocrity does not satisfy either. All that is hidden, taboo, secret, or suppressed interests us. In Libra, we strived towards equality and fairness. Scorpio, however, instinctively believes that life simply isn’t fair.

Scorpio’s energy is provocative, usually in a quiet way, as well as passionate, strong-willed, and intense. It can be an immensely healing and transformative energy. Jealousy, vindictiveness, beating a dead horse, and manipulative are some of the more negative expressions of Scorpio.

We are more likely to prosper through strategy and knowing the value of keeping some things to ourselves at the right times. Efforts to repurpose, recycle, salvage, and transform can be successful. We’re especially successful at organizing, researching, investigating, and analyzing.

While we can be quite controlled with effort, there is some inclination to extremism. We can be drawn to challenges and crises, and we feel compelled to heal, fix, and direct or manage.

Mercury is in Libra from August 30-November 5. [This is longer than usual due to Mercury’s retrograde, occuring entirely in the sign of Libra, from September 27-October 18.] When Mercury is in Libra, we are diplomatic and friendly. During this cycle, we bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about ways to improve our negotiation skills.

Mercury in Libra can be vacillating energy as we attempt to see both sides of any given situation. Making quick decisions can be more challenging than usual, as we can sit “on the fence.” We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions to keep the peace. In our negotiations, we don’t want to assert ourselves so as to appear to be the “bad guy.” However, this is a reasonable period for considering others’ points of view. We are more inclined to arrive at fair conclusions.

Mercury is in Scorpio from November 5-24. When Mercury is in Scorpio, our thoughts and communications are more probing and intense. While Mercury in Libra urged us to find balance and arrive at reasonable solutions, Mercury in Scorpio instinctively knows that life simply isn’t fair. Mercury in Scorpio seeks truths in all that is hidden and undercover.

We tend to probe, observe, and focus our thoughts under this influence. Looking for motivations–the more deeply buried, the better–satisfies an intellectual need now. Our thoughts are profound. We throw away superficial manners of communicating in favor of deep conversations.

Scorpio is exceptionally sharp, profound, and analytical yet also intuitive. Thinking is inclined to be one-track-minded, focused, and even obsessive.

Mercury-in-Scorpio isn’t shocked by much, or at least keeps its cool even if surprised. During this cycle, our approach is psychological when analyzing, deciding, and studying or observing. We’re not afraid to go places mentally. We get to the heart of a matter or to the bottom line very quickly, usually through instinct. Our resourcefulness and strategy stand out. We’re competitive.

We can be intrigued by motives and secrets or taboos. It’s not easy to take instruction or someone’s word for it–we have to experience it ourselves to draw conclusions. This position of Mercury is one of the most persuasive. It’s an excellent time to research, investigate, troubleshoot, and work on hunches. If left to observe on our own, we do our best thinking, seeking the hidden layers of a situation.

Venus is in Sagittarius from October 7-November 5. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy shifts from intense to buoyant. Sagittarius, of course, has its intense moments, considering it is a fire sign. However, its energy is considerably less focused; and, while Scorpio is most concerned with intimacy with a specific person, Sagittarius’ love is of a more universal kind.

Romantic adventures and a straightforward–even blunt–approach to love are on the agenda. Gone are the intricacy and complexity of Venus in Scorpio. Truth and higher meaning are the priorities with Venus in Sagittarius. 

We’re idealistic in our relationships during this cycle. It’s more critical than usual that our partners and companions support our dreams, goals, freedom needs, beliefs, and vision. We value intellectual rapport more than usual during this period.

Openness with our feelings can sometimes backfire, but for the most part, it can be refreshing. We tend to more spontaneously enjoy ourselves or throw ourselves into pleasure, art, cultural interests, and special interest topics at this time. We can especially enjoy travel, learning, the outdoors, or animals. 

With money, we can be a little reckless or careless, but also faithful and optimistic. Some element of luck or good karma can be involved with our finances. Benefits, whether material or spiritual, can come through publishing, foreign or religious connections, travel, education, or legal matters.

Venus is in Capricorn from November 5, 2021-March 6, 2022. [This is longer than usual due to the Venus retrograde, occuring entirely in the sign of Capricorn, from December 19, 2021-January 29, 2022.] Getting serious about our finances and boosting our relations with business partners and/or co-workers will be easier than usual under this influence. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions increases.

We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships. We’re steadfast and seek genuine, perhaps old-fashioned connections. It’s not a time for PDA, and we can be somewhat guarded and reserved with expressing our feelings or revealing our relationships.

The underdog who works hard can have their time in the sun now. We value slow and steady effort and long-term prospects. Reliability in others is most attractive.

This cycle favors getting along well with higher-ups, conservative business goals and ventures, long-term investments, and matters related to pension.

Mars is in Scorpio from October 30-December 13.  In Scorpio, Mars is driven and focused on getting what it wants. We are persevering, single-minded, and strong. The desire to experience our emotional depths, as well as the urge to penetrate the surface of life in order to explore deeper levels of existence, is powerful. We are fascinated with what others tend to repress, and are drawn to experiencing and understanding these things. We are less inclined to avoid important issues now. In some ways, we are attracted to crisis, as we see crisis as transformative and emotionally exciting. We would rather feel extreme emotions than nothing at all, as mediocrity or the “middle road” is felt to be unsatisfying.

Venus is in Sagittarius from October 7 to November 5. As Venus moves from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy changes from intense to buoyant. G20 under pressure to deliver on climate ahead of UN talks

G20 leaders gather amid intense negotiations to seal agreement on fighting climate change

Rome (AFP) - G20 leaders launched a desperate push Sunday to agree a joint approach to tackling climate change, with officials working through the night to reach a meaningful commitment ahead of UN talks.

The Group of 20 major economies emit nearly 80 percent of carbon emissions, and a promise of action would provide a much-needed boost to COP26 climate talks starting in Glasgow on Sunday.

But draft communiques suggest they would fall short of a firm pledge to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels or a clear timeline on how to reach net zero emissions.

Experts say meeting the 1.5 degree target – the most ambitious goal in the 2015 Paris climate deal – means slashing global emissions nearly in half by 2030 and to “net-zero” by 2050.

Officials in Rome “negotiated the whole night” and into Sunday morning, an EU source said, pressing for something to take to Glasgow, where nearly 200 leaders gather over the next few days.

US President Joe Biden is among those pushing for tough action in Rome, although his own ambitious climate policy is mired by infighting among his own party.

A senior US official said late Saturday that elements of the final G20 statement “are still being negotiated”.

The official expressed hope the summit would commit “to end overseas financing of coal”, offer “positive language” on decarbonising the power sector and see more countries sign up to targets on cutting methane.

Speaking to the weekly Journal du Dimanche, French President Emmanuel Macron said the Rome summit had to “do its utmost” to ensure the success of Glasgow, but that “nothing is ever written before a COP”.

“Let’s not forget that in Paris, in 2015, nothing was decided in advance,” Macron said.

President Xi Jinping of China – by far the world’s biggest carbon polluter – is absent from the meeting, as is Russia’s Vladimir Putin, although they are participating via videolink.

Among the flurry of bilaterals planned on the sidelines of the Rome summit, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Sunday with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and had a bilateral planned with summit host Mario Draghi, the Italian prime minister.

- Going alone ‘not an option’ -

The Rome G20 summit provides a forum for a range of sidelines meetings, including between leaders of the UK, Frence, Germany and the US on Iran

After a visit to the world-famous Trevi Fountain, the G20 leaders were due to hear from Britain’s Prince Charles, a committed environmentalist who has been making the case for urgent action.

The heir to the throne will remind them of their “overwhelming responsibility to generations yet unborn”, his office said.

“It is impossible not to hear the despairing voices of young people who see you as the stewards of the planet, holding the viability of their future in your hands.”

On Saturday, Draghi also urged G20 leaders to act together on climate, but also on improving the delivery of vaccines and on helping the world recover from the devastation of Covid-19.

“From the pandemic, to climate change, to fair and equitable taxation, going it alone is simply not an option,” he told the gathered leaders.

The G20 showed it could work together on some issues, green lighting a deal for a minimum tax of 15 percent on global corporations, as part of a reform plan inked by almost 140 nations.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen hailed it as “historic”, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel – attending her last G20 summit with her likely successor Olaf Scholz – called it a “great success”.

Rome is hosting the first in-person G20 summit since the coronavirus pandemic, set in the monumental surroundings of EUR, a fascist-era neighbourhood known for its modernist architecture.

Biden, on a European trip he hopes will reassert US leadership after the tumultuous Trump years, also met Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan on Sunday.

Earlier this month the Turkish leader threatened to expel a slew of Western ambassadors, including from the United States, over their support for a jailed Turkish philanthropist.

Abortion rights and anti-abortion activisits demonstrate outside the US Supreme Court

Washington (AFP) - Abortion has been legal in the United States for nearly 50 years but remains an emotional and bitterly contentious issue and access to the procedure varies from state to state.

The Supreme Court is to hear arguments on Monday challenging a Texas law that prohibits abortion after six weeks, before many women even know they are pregnant.

Here is a synopsis of the state of affairs:

- Roe v. Wade -

The US Supreme Court ruled in its landmark 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade that access to abortion is a woman’s constitutional right, striking down state laws that restricted the procedure.

In a 1992 ruling in the case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the court guaranteed a woman’s right to an abortion until the fetus is viable outside the womb, which is typically around 22 to 24 weeks.

That is longer than in many other countries, where the cutoff is the end of the first trimester, or around 12 weeks.

Individual states retained the right to enact laws protecting a woman’s health so long as they did not impose an “undue burden” on access to abortion of a non-viable fetus.

- Patchwork -

With “undue burden” being subject to interpretation, a number of conservative US states have imposed a patchwork of restrictions on abortion, forcing many facilities to close their doors.

West Virginia and Mississippi, for example, each have only one abortion clinic while in California there are more than 150.

Among the restrictions are parental consent for minors to undergo an abortion, a 24-hour waiting period, and a requirement to listen to the beating heart of an embryo.

Money is another factor. Some 10 states prohibit private insurance companies from reimbursing for abortions while 15 allow public funds to be used to pay for the procedure for women who cannot afford it.

- Poverty and minorities -

There were more than 862,000 abortions in the United States in 2017, according to the Guttmacher Institute, an organization which supports access to contraception and abortion.

That number corresponds to 13.5 abortions for every 1,000 women of procreation age, about the same rate as in other developed countries.

Nearly 50 percent of the women seeking abortions live below the poverty line and Black and Hispanic women are overrepresented compared with their proportion of the population (29 percent and 25 percent respectively).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 92.2 percent of abortions carried out in the United States take place in the first trimester.

- Public opinion divided -

Nearly 60 percent of Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, a number which has remained relatively stable in recent years, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted this spring.

But there are enormous differences between Republicans and Democrats on the issue.

Eighty percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say abortion should be legal in all or most cases but just 35 percent of Republicans feel this way, according to the Pew survey.

And the partisan split is getting wider: the numbers were 72 percent and 39 percent in 2016.

Religious convictions also play a large role: 77 percent of white evangelicals believe abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.

- A conservative offensive -

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Republican Donald Trump attracted votes from the religious right with a promise to name conservative justices to the Supreme Court who share their values and would be inclined to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Trump ended up making three nominations to the Supreme Court, cementing a 6-3 majority on the nation’s highest court.

Their arrival prompted Republican legislators in Texas and other conservative states to pass laws they hoped would force the court to revisit Roe v. Wade.

The strategy has borne fruit with the court examining the Texas law on Monday and a Mississippi law on December 1 that would ban abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
