Mercury now turns retrograde at 25° Libra 28′.

Although not quite as popular as Sun sign astrology, “Mercury Retrograde” has certainly become a buzzword – or buzz phrase – these days.
What is Mercury Retrograde? Three, and sometimes four, times a year, the planet Mercury appears to be moving backwards in the sky for a period of approximately 3 weeks. “Appears” is the key word here, because, technically speaking, no planet actually moves backwards in their orbits around the Sun. In fact, they don’t even slow down. Retrograde-station-direct cycles are essentially illusions that result from our point of view from Earth, simply because the Earth is also orbiting the Sun at a different speed than the other planets.
Mercury turns retrograde more frequently than any other planet. It can never be more than 28 degrees from the Sun, and whenever it reaches its furthest distance from the Sun, it changes direction.
As the planet of communication, Mercury retrograde tends to breed a certain level of confusion. Mercury rules our “lower” mind–how we perceive and interpret information that we receive from our environment, and how we relay that information to others.
Mercury has rulership over such things as speaking, negotiating, buying and selling, listening, formal contracts, documents, travel, the mail and shipping, and so forth. All of these areas of life are affected when Mercury is functioning in a sluggish state.
Decision-making is challenged during Mercury retrograde. Needless to say, it is not advised to sign contracts, engage in important decision-making, or launch a new business.
Delays and challenges are more probable with Mercury retrograde. This period is best used for re-organizing and reflecting.

On October 6th, the New Moon occurs in the sign of Libra, prompting a new beginning. It’s a time for taking charge of our relationships and giving them their due attention, as well as working on our negotiation and partnering skills. The resolution of conflicts is in focus and the objective.
This lunation aligns with Mars and forms a quincunx with Uranus. As such, we should watch for too-quick decisions and actions, but pay close attention to our instincts and impulses now. Mars adds more power and energy to our quest to harmonize and partner, but we can struggle a little with the idea of going our own way. As much as want these things, it can be difficult to integrate these urges into our personalities or to act upon them consistently.
Four major bodies turn direct this month: Pluto on the 6th, Saturn on the 10th, and Mercury and Jupiter on the 18th. While the shifts themselves can be a little disorienting and perhaps intense in some cases, we start to see some developments. We’re on the road to making progress.
On the 6th, Pluto turns direct after retrograde motion since late April. Intensity is with us in the days (and perhaps weeks for the sensitive) surrounding this date with a strong focus on ambition and the need to feel empowered. Over the coming weeks and months, the power to make deep changes in our lives becomes more insistent and direct (less internalized). We are less likely to brood over changes that we feel have been thrust upon us and more likely to make necessary changes.
Saturn turns direct on the 10th, serving as a strong reminder to take care of our responsibilities and bring our goals down to earth. With Saturn’s direct turn, our responsibilities, and perhaps our limitations, are magnified. Gradually, our longer-term goals and plans become clearer.
On October 18th, Jupiter turns direct. This change of direction can mark a turning of the corner with certain projects and relationships as well as attitudes–we enjoy increased enthusiasm. With Jupiter direct, our confidence in ourselves, our beliefs, and the universe builds. We are more lighthearted and ready to share ourselves and what we’ve learned with others. Friendship and happiness goals are in focus, and they’re moving along.
Also on October 18th, Mercury turns direct in the sign of Libra, and will continue its retrograde until October 18th, staying in the same sign throughout. During this period, we can be slow to reach a decision — possibly painfully slow, as our minds bounce back and forth between the alternatives, finding merits for any and all of them.
This retrograde cycle may affect our close partnerships the most. We might rethink old positions and relationships, and our observations tend to be particularly idealized. In a general sense, retrograde Mercury periods send us to the past for more or previously hidden information. They’re cycles for learning to let go of control, and for thinking about issues in a new way.
On October 20th, a Full Moon occurs in the sign of Aries, reminding us to consider how we are honoring ourselves in the context of our close relationships. New revelations can occur now, particularly regarding our physical bodies, leadership skills, ability to initiate and begin new things, and close partnerships.
This Full Moon urges us to strike a balance between meeting our personal needs and attending to the needs of a significant other, and between independence or autonomy and dependence or companionability. With the Sun forming an alignment with Mars and square to Pluto near this Full Moon, there can be pressures and a bit of paranoia attached to our realizations and the courage and passion for taking action. We can struggle with obstacles, but we’re brave, determined, and resourceful.

OCTOBER 1
Mars opposes Chiron this morning. This transit can complicate our lives if we can’t see how to pursue our interests and desires directly, straightforwardly. We can be defensive and touchy, and resentments or frustrations can surface now. Watch for self-righteous, superior, or rebellious attitudes when a gentler approach is preferable. Mercury, currently retrograde, forms a square to Pluto, and we can be telling others only what we want them to know. There is a tendency to worry and obsess, and there’s a backward focus to today’s thoughts and conversations. We should try to avoid forcing our ideas on others and strive to maintain an open mind. We can become obsessed with getting our message across and for others to agree with our thoughts. This aspect may play to our insecurities and fears that we’re not getting all the information we need. Mental anxiety or troubles could manifest now. Compulsive thinking is possible, but with mindfulness, we might engage in in-depth, penetrating communication or think more deeply about a matter. As the day advances, we head towards a Venus-Pluto sextile that helps us gain new insight into our relationships, money matters, and comfort or pleasure needs. Or, we take a comfortably strategic approach to these affairs. Our feelings are more focused and intensified in a generally pleasant and positive way. In fact, we seek depth of emotion and authenticity in our dealings. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Leo.
OCTOBER 2
A Venus-Pluto sextile early today gently breaks down barriers, helping us with new insight into our needs for love or pleasure and our money situation. This morning’s Sun-Venus semi-square, however, can pull up irritations. While they can seem to stem from others, they may very well reflect inner uneasiness. We can be especially hungry for others’ appreciation. What we want to do and think we should do can be at odds now, and we may not be very productive with this kind of discontent. Ideally, we look for creative solutions for dissatisfaction. With the Moon in Leo opposite Jupiter and square Venus, the tendency may be to go over the top. However, we’re in good shape for connecting with our affections and creative nature.
The void Moon occurs from 7:43 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Venus), until the Moon enters Virgo tomorrow, Sunday, October 3rd, at 4:38 AM EDT.
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships – romantic, business, social – are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It’s easy in theory, but it’s only in practice that it comes to mean anything real – so practice until you get it right!
Mercury in Libra A new cycle begins for you, signaling a greater than usual interest in relationships, social connections, and the arts – on a more intellectual level than in the past, most likely. Seeing both sides of an issue, and figuring out resolutions to opposing views: these things take on more importance in your life.
Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Mars in Libra “I’m giving you a definite maybe” – that’s the motto of the cycle you’re now entering. It’s a time of refinement and tact, of an urge to please others that is so strong as to make it hard to decide or act for fear of offending someone. You’ll quickly learn to balance this out, or you’ll discover that there is no peace in compromise – and this can be tough on close relationships. The trick is to find the win-win solution to the no-win situation – and if anyone’s ever up to it, you are now.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s much more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.

About the Void-of-Course Moon
I lived in the UK for many years, and there most astrologers are very surprised by the popularity of such an astrological factor as the void-of-course Moon in the United States, even among people who know very little about astrology.
We use this factor in our astrological work all the time, but only in one very specific and highly technical branch of astrology, the Horary. There, if we find that the Moon was void-of-course at the moment when a question was asked, we might decide that it is not appropriate to answer such a question. Or, if some of us will still decide to proceed with the answer, they will most probably say that nothing will come out of the matter in question (which, depending on the question, might mean that there is nothing to be afraid of).
For quite a while I was hesitant about whether it really makes sense to pay attention to the void-of-course status of the Moon in daily life, outside of the technical consideration of the horary work. However, on a few important occasions I've noticed that the outcome of my initiative undertaken when the Moon was void-of-course was very different from my expectations, and quite in line with the meaning of the void-of-course term.
I will give some examples, as well as expand on the meaning of this factor, but first of all I want to attempt an explanation of what exactly is the void-of-course Moon. I will try to do this mainly because I believe that the good understanding of the nature of the void-of-course period will help to understand its negative and positive sides better. But also, it would be good if the general public had a better idea of how it all works. Right now the common level of understanding is quite low, which is demonstrated by the questions I am getting from the visitors of Lunarium from time to time.
What the Void-of-Course Moon Is
It's a common knowledge that the Moon circles around the Earth, and it completes the circle in about 27 days, the lunar month (there is another lunar month called synodic which lasts almost 30 days, but it's of no interest to us here). The Moon moves all the time along the Zodiac, and there are 12 Signs of the Zodiac, each of them exactly 1/12 part of the circle. It is easy to calculate then that it takes roughly two and a half days for the Moon to cross one Sign of the Zodiac.
Each sign is like a chapter in the book of life, and moving through it the Moon is telling a story. When the Moon enters the next sign, it starts a new story. We still remember the old one, but we are not deeply involved into it anymore. Whether we notice it or not, each time the Moon enters the next Sign of the Zodiac, something substantially changes in our life, some context, or the emotional background of events. Most of the time we aren't aware of this change because the Moon is strongly connected to our subconsciousness, not to our consciousness. It is the subconsciousness who is deeply aware of the change.
So in each of the signs the Moon starts a new story when it enters the sign, but those stories can have different lengths. Some of them continue for almost the whole two-and-a-half-day period, others are much shorter, but there is always a pause in the end of the story. It can be short or long, but it is always there. That pause in the end of the story is the void-of-course period of the Moon.
We don't know why it happens, this pause, from the philosophical viewpoint. Maybe the story-teller gives us the time to think about the content of the story we've just heard, or maybe it is a chance to prepare to the next story, because it is going to be very important. We just know that the pause is there.
That was a metaphorical description of the void-of-course period, now let me try another one, a little bit more technical.
Moving through each sign, the Moon makes contacts with the planets. It isn't really important what those contacts are and how they are made, but it is exactly those contacts that provide the content of the sign's story. The exact number of contacts and their distribution in time depends on where all the planets are in the Zodiac, and this arrangement changes all the time, eternally.
At some point the Moon makes its last contact in the given sign. That's the end of the story, but the new story won't start until the Moon will enter the next Sign of the Zodiac.
So here is a more or less precise definition:
The void-of-course period of the Moon is the period of time from the moment the Moon makes the last contact with any planet in the current sign of the zodiac, and until it enters the next sign.
The void-of-course period can be very short, only a few minutes, but it can also be very long, about two days (although that happens quite rarely).
I am writing these words on the 11th of May 2013, soon after the New Moon in Taurus (which was also a solar eclipse). It so happened that that exactly New Moon was the last contact the Moon made in the Sign of Taurus, and it took place on the 10th of May at 0:28 of Universal Time (it was 1:28am in London, UK). That New Moon was the last word of the story the Moon was telling in Taurus.
However, the Moon stayed in Taurus until 21:22 UT of the same day (10:22pm in London), when it entered the next sign, Gemini. So most of the 10th of May 2013, from 1:28am to 10:22pm here in the UK, was one lengthy void-of-course period.
Let's see how the void-of-course periods, those pauses, are shown in the Universal Lunar Calendar:
Let's concentrate on the lower of the two symbols pointed by green arrows in this picture. It's a symbol for the sign of Sagittarius (of course you need to know the symbols of the signs of the zodiac to understand that, but it's an essential knowledge for anyone interested in astrology). And there is a time 6:58 next to it. This information tells us that on this day the Moon has entered the sign of Sagittarius at 6:58 (a 24-hour format is used in this case, so it's equivalent to 6:58 AM). At that moment, the story of the previous sign of the zodiac (Scorpio) has ended, and a new story, that of Sagittarius, has started. I hope you realise from what was said above that this is the end of a void-of-course period of the Moon. But when was the start it? Now pay attention to the upper symbol, the black arrow pointing to the right, with 1:28 time next to it. That's when the Moon made its last aspect in the previous sign, and the pause has started. So on this particular day the void-of-course period of the Moon lasted from 1:28 to 6:58.
Sometimes you'll see that a void-of-course period will start on one day while the Moon will enter the next sign on another day. Whenever you see in the calendar a black arrow pointing to the right, that's when the void-of-course period will begin. It will end then whenever the Moon will enter the very next sign of the zodiac.
If you have an iPhone or an iPad, your life will be easier as you won't need to decipher any symbols. My app iLuna for iOS will describe everything for you in plain English:
Or, if you have an Android smartphone, you can get a similar result with iLuna for Android:
Now you should have an idea of what a void-of-course period of the Moon is.
What the Void-of-Course Moon Isn't
There is a widespread misunderstanding that when the Moon is void-of-course, it is in no Sign of the Zodiac but in some kind of a hole, an empty space. This is very wrong.
The Signs of the Zodiac are the 12 sections of the ecliptic, the imaginary path of the Sun around the sky. The ecliptic is a circle, so there are 360 degrees in it. Each sign is a 30 degrees section, 30 x 12 = 360. There are no holes and no empty spaces in this system.
The Moon is always in one or another Sign of the Zodiac. Please understand this, and if you still don't understand what the void-of-course period is then please re-read attentively the previous section. If you still don't get it, please let me know, and I will try to write an even less technical explanation.
The Meaning of the Void-of-Course Moon
In Horary Astrology, we are looking at the contacts with planets which the Moon is going to make before it leaves the sign it is in. Those aspects will tell us what is going to happen about the situation in question. But if the Moon is void-of-course, i.e. it isn't going to contact any planets before the end of the story, then the only possible answer is that nothing is going to happen. So if a person asked "will I get married", the answer will be perceived as negative, but if someone was worried and asked "will I get fired?" then the answer nothing is going to happen happen would be perceived as positive.
Similarly, in daily life void-of-course periods aren't necessarily bad. We just need to keep these words in mind: nothing is going to happen, and then see if this is what we want or not.
One day I had two job interviews, one a few hours after another but both during a void-of-course period. Both interviews were positive, and from my previous experience I would think that I am going to have two job offers by the end of the day. However, before the end of the day the Moon had entered another sign of the zodiac, another story had started, and not only I hadn't received any job offers, I never got any feedback from the job agencies, which was quite unusual.
On the other hand, on a few occasions I had to get certain things done in a country where many officials are famous for being corrupt. I was worried that they will challenge me, and since I don't know how to give bribes I'll be in trouble. However, both situations happened during void-of-course periods of the Moon, and everything went unbelievably smoothly, to my huge relief.
Not so long ago, I found an article by Estelle Daniels in the old 1997 Llewellyn's Moon Sign Book. The article is titled Using the Void-of-Course Moon, and it offers some great ideas and examples. Quoting from this article,
During a void Moon you should not sign a contract, make plans, close a deal, or start a project. Basically anything which you want to have a concrete real-world result should not be started, signed or sealed. If you do, these things will never get off the ground, never materialize, have to be re-done, or have so many problems and setbacks as to be useless anyhow.
On the other hand,
... if you want to drop a bombshell, and yet have fewer repercussions in the long run, during the void-of-course Moon is the time to do it.
And then goes a brilliant example:
Remember President Reagan, the "Teflon® President", who never got blamed for any of the bad stuff? Well he was very careful to schedule those presidential news conferences where he would answer the hard questions about nasty controversial stuff during void Moons. There would be questions and discussions, yet the next day nothing would ever really be said in the paper or on TV. The topic was just dropped, forgotten, or glossed over, and nobody really ever noticed. The void Moon was Reagan's Teflon®. Even in August 1988, when Nancy Reagan admitted at the Republican national convention on live TV with Dan Rather that the Reagans used astrology, it was during a void Moon, and nobody really noticed or cared. … Of course, when President Reagan had something had something wonderful to say which would make him look him good and he wanted people to notice, he was very careful to make sure the Moon was not void-of-course, so he would receive maximum notice and credit.
So it looks like the void-of-course periods were given to us as a time for those little stories which we don't want to be written into the books of our lives. They are a little bit like little stickers with a few words which you can stick somewhere in a book - they are there, and not there at the same time.
How To Find Out When The Next Void-Of-Course Period Is
We do agree that void-of-course periods are important, don't we?
Now, the bad news is that it can be difficult to figure out when exactly those periods take place. That's not a kind of information you can find in a typical calendar or a newspaper (at least not in those calendars and newspapers I am aware of), and you can't just calculate them on a piece of paper. It takes a few pages of astronomical formulas to do all the necessary calculations.
The good news however is that these days pretty much everyone has some sort of computer at hand, be it a desktop, a notebook or a smartphone. And those computers are more than happy to do for us all the tedious calculations in a split of a second. For more than a decade I am working on various software programs that make basic astrology available for everyone, and here are the solutions I can offer right now for those who want to keep track of the void-of-course Moon:
- The Universal Lunar Calendar. Its benefit is that it is available to everyone for free, and you can calculate a calendar for pretty much every year, and for more or less any location on the Earth. The downside is that it might require a little bit of effort to figure out what all those symbols mean, and the information in the calendar is somewhat dense. Another downside is the platform on which the Calendar is built, which is Google AppEngine, is a bit flaky. You might need to reload the page a few times until it will stop reporting a weird error and start showing the real stuff.
- iLuna app, which currently exists in two versions: iLuna for iOS and iLuna for Android. These apps are very handy when you are on the go because they don't need any Internet connection to work.
I would be also very happy if you found it possible to share with me your void-of-course Moon experiences. My email address is master@lunarium.co.uk.

Out-Of-Bounds Planets
To understand what the out-of-bound condition is, you nedd to be familiar with declination. If you don't know what declination is, you might want to read my other article, What Is Declination, and Why It Is Important
The Meaning Of "Out-Of-Bounds"
There is an area of the starry sky where the Sun travels through the year, day after day. That area is a wide band extending approximately to 23° 26' on both sides of the celestial equator. The Moon and the planets mostly travel within this Sun-controlled area of the sky, but occasionally some of them leave it by reaching higher declinations, North or South. The Moon can reach about 28.5°, Mercury and Mars — up to 27°, while Venus occasionally can travel as far as 28°. Steven Forrest believes that it doesn't matter what the declination is, as soon as it is over 23° 26', the planet is out-of-bounds, there is no gray area there. Although of course, logically, the higher the declination, the more noticeable should be the traits related to the out-of-bounds status.
Some authors can give slightly different values for the maximal declination of the Sun, but you can always find the appropriate value in many books of ephemeris under the name of 'True obliquity of ecliptic'. The Raphael's 51-Year Ephemeris 2000–2050 give 23° 26' 14'' for May 2021. Rosicrucian Ephemeris 1900–2000 offer (under the name of 'ECLIPTIC OBL.') 23° 27' 08' for July 1910 and 23° 26' 14'' for March 1998. Since in the ephemeris and in astrological software you do not usually see the seconds of declination, you can consider anything having declination exceeding 26° 27' as being out-of-bounds.
It should be understood that when speaking about the Moon, it won't be out-of-bounds every year. The orbits of the Moon and the Sun are arranged in such a way that only during approximately a half of the 18.6-year long lunar nodes cycle the Moon's declination can exceed that of the Sun. The years with the highest declinations of the Moon were 1913, 1931–32, 1950, 1969, 1987–88, 2006, and the next such period will be in 2024–25. And again, not all people born in those years have an out-of-bounds Moon because most of the time, while it is travelling from the extreme southern to the extreme northern declination and vice versa, its declination is somewhere in the middle, i.e. it is normal.
Symbolically, this can be understood like the Moon or a planet leaving the well-trodden and controlled by the central authority (the Sun) path and disappearing in the dark forest. To do what?
Manifestations Of Out-Of-Bound Planets In People's Personalities
Steven Forrest wrote about the topic in his brilliant article "The Out-of-Bounds Moon", published in The Astrological Journal in September/October 2012 (and I believe that the same ideas can be applied to any out-of-bounds personal planet):
The Moon is then, ..., out of the King's sight. No longer under Daddy's thumb. We might say that it has moved beyond the Pale. Gone out of control. Or gone wild. It has broken the rules. It has shattered the boundaries, broken the mold, crossed the Rubicon. Bravely, or drunkenly, the Moon has said, "Roll the dice".
Inwardly, the out-of-bounds Moon often correlates with feelings of being an outsider, of not fitting in, of not having a place in this world. This can be painful — and it can also lead to an attitude of not giving a damn. Or to passivity. Or to resentment. and to radical forms of existential creativity.
Steven believes that the Moon is the most dramatic of all the planets in its effects when out-of-bounds. I find that the out-of-bounds status of the personal planets (Mercury, Venus and Mars) is very important too.
Some people were born with the Moon or a personal planet out-of-bounds, and in this case the typical for this status qualities will be with them for the whole life. Others can acquire such qualities temporarily, when their Moon or a personal planet goes out-of-bounds in the secondary progression. Right now, let's concentrate on the ways how the out-of-bounds status of the Moon or an important planet can manifest itself in people's lives.
Steven Forrest defines in his article nine typical manifestations, and gives many examples. I wholeheartedly recommend you to read the whole article. Here, for brevity, I will only list a few, the most typical categories, and mention some examples:
- Choosing to Leave, Breaking Out, Outlaws. These people have a tendency "to walk away from situations which more conventional individuals might consider prestigious or desirable", or they might decide to escape from the rules and norms of the society they were born into. They can also ignore the society's expectations in relation to their gender, or age, or something else. Some examples are "1960s music star Cat Stevens, who left his stardom behind to follow his muslim faith" and Amelia Earhart, an American aviation pioneer who was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
- Geniuses. Those who "think outside the box". A great example is Albert Einstein.
- Zany Characters - the former Russian president Boris Yeltsin is a good example.
- Sociopaths and Criminals. One example here is Carlos the Jackal, the international assassin.
Some of the out-of-bounds personalities even managed to leave the Earth! The first Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin is one example, and the other one is the astronaut Edgar Mitchell who visited the Moon and later took up psychic research.
Pamela Welsh wrote in her article Those Wild Out-of-Bounds Planets that was published in June/July 2001 issue of The Mountain Astrologer that out-of-bounds planets can signify extraordinary genius or point to volatile and aberrant behavior. Such people tend to know no boundaries and accept no limits. "Often, there's just no stopping them". This can result in boundless creativity and success, allowing the native to go way beyond the potential that one might normally expect. They can often achieve extraordinary things and overcome great obstacles in life. They are always stretching the limits of what is commonly accepted in society.
On the other hand, an out-of-bound planet's energy can indicate a tendency toward mental imbalance, or at the very least, it can create a lot of pressure and stress in an individual's life.
People with an out-of-bounds Moon, according to Pamela Welsh, are usually unique and very independent, they enjoy their freedom and solitude. However, they can be extremely sensitive, emotionally unstable and overwhelmed by feelings of doubt, guilt, or depression. Quite often, the out-of-bounds Moon reveals an overachiever who is unconsciously seeking success, prominence, or material security as a substitute for the love and attention that were not received from the mother during childhood. Contacts involving the progressed or directed Moon are particularly important for people born with the Moon out of bounds.
To interpret the effect of an out-of-bounds planet, Pamela Welsh advises us to consider the qualities and characteristics normally associated with the planet involved, and then think about how it might manifest if it were behaving in a very extreme way. For example, when Mars is out of bounds, its natural assertion and physical energy can either become violently aggressive or produce extraordinary courage and physical abilities. The alluring charm and aesthetic beauty of Venus can generate extremely vain indulgence or exceptional artistic talent.
As an additional interesting note, in Magi Astrology Mars in an extreme declination is counted among the so-called Super Sports Champion factors, so it can be a sign of a great athlete. They even state that the more extreme the declination of a planet, the stronger the benefits from this planet to the native.
In my studies, I noticed that most successful individuals do not have any out-of-bounds planets, but some of them do. Here are a few of those I found: Elon Musk – Mercury (24° 25'), Warren Buffett (the Moon 24° 29'), Donald Trump (Mercury 25° 09'), Melania Trump (the Moon 27° 53') Vladimir Putin (the Moon 25° 38', Mars 25° 20'), Prince Charles (Mars 24° 03'), Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall (the Moon 26° 15'), Agatha Christie (Mars 26° 07'), Prince Harry (25° 04'), Mstislav Rostropovich (Mars 24° 36'), Boris Yeltsin (the Moon 27° 49'), Mikhail Gorbachev (Mars 24° 26').
How To Find Out Whether You Are An Out-Of-Bounds Person
The easiest way to find out whether any personal planets were out-of-bounds at the moment of birth, and whether any personal planets became or ceased to be out-of-bounds in secondary progression in 100 years since birth, is to use the free online Out-of-Bounds Planets Calculator. It is sufficient to know the date of birth of the person you are interested in. Say, Arnold Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947. This screenshot shows a partial result of calculation for him:
You can see that Schwarzenegger was born with an out-of-bounds Moon, but then through the years, in the secondary progression, the Moon was becoming, then ceasing to be an out-of-bounds planet, and there were other planets, like Mars at the age of 7 years, that were gaining the OOB status, then losing it. It is interesting to read celebrities' biographies with this information at hand, but it is a lot more interesting to compare the results of the calculations to the lives of those whom you know well — like yourself. I will share with you my personal impressions in the next section.
A Possibility of Discovery
I find that changes in the OOB status of personal planets can be a rich source of information for an astrologer. I will use myself as an example, that is probably the person I know the best. I was born with an OOB Mars (its declination was over 25 degrees). And in my youth I did something really weird that affected the whole course of my life. At that time, I was very interested in chemistry, which is quite appropriate for Mars in a Water sign — all those acids and boiling liquids. I was so good that I took the first prize at a chemistry competition organized by the top Soviet university, so a place was pretty much guaranteed for me there. Everyone would go to that prestigious university, if they could.
But that wasn't good enough for an out-of-bounds Mars, to go somewhere everyone would go. So I decided to choose a military career instead and went to a rather lacklustre military college. It was probably the age when my Mars returned under control of reason, ceased to be out-of-bounds, 21 years, that I finally realised that choosing a military career was the silliest thing I made so far. I also got married then, i.e. became a 'family man' rather than a maverick.
The other interesting point is that my progressed Mercury became out-of-bounds when I was 44 — that is when I did another weird thing, but this time a good one. I became a student of a Scottish university, perhaps the oldest of students there. But I enjoyed my studies, and as a result I had a chance to live and work in the UK for more than 12 years. My progressed Mercury is still out-of-bounds, it will return to normal only at the age of 69. I will then probably stop studying everything I can put my hands on, and start watching TV or wasting my time in some other common ways...
Have a go at the OOB Calculator, see what it will tell you, and if you'll be moved to share your story with me, I'll be happy!
