The Sun is in Aquarius from January 19-February 18. During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives, and strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us.
We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe.
Mercury is in Capricorn from January 25-February 14. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized.
We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. Our survival instincts are strong–we’re interested in what will benefit us in the long term.
We’re not interested in the fluff, preferring to get right to a point or the bottom line. Communication can be somewhat guarded or cautious, and similarly not very floral or expressive. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions increases.
We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships. Sister Andre is the oldest-known woman in France and Europe, and the second-oldest in the world after Kane Tanaka, a 119-year-old who lives in Japan
Toulon (France) (AFP) - Her 118th birthday wish is “to die soon”. But in the meantime, Lucile Randon, better-known as “Sister Andre”, always keeps her door open for any visitor who might want to say hello.
Sister Andre is the oldest-known woman in France and Europe, and the second-oldest in the world after Kane Tanaka, a 119-year-old who lives in Japan.
She was born in Ales, southern France, on February 11, 1904, the year that New York opened its first subway, the Tour de France had only been run once and World War I was still a decade away.
In her room in a retirement home in the southern city of Toulon, Sister Andre has a single bed, a Virgin Mary statue and a radio which she never turns on anymore. The outside world, she says, is too stressful.
Most of the time she sits in her wheelchair, her head tilted to one side, her blind eyes shut.
Is she praying, thinking or napping? It’s hard to say. But when she speaks, her voice is present and her recollections vivid.
Her daily routine starts at 7 am when she is woken up and taken to breakfast, before being wheeled to morning mass which she, always dressed in her nun’s habit, never misses.
- ‘He’s charming’ -
“It’s awful that I depend on others for everything I do,” said Sister Andre, who worked full-time until the late 1970s and took care of other, often younger, home residents until she was 100.
“I’m happy when I have company,” she said – especially that of David Tavella, a staffer at the home that she has been living in for a decade, and her favourite companion. “He’s charming,” she said, grasping his hand.

Tavella also acts as her press agent, fielding interview requests from reporters, sifting through the many boxes of chocolates sent by admirers, and checking her post.
Among her letters are handwritten New Year’s wishes for 2022 sent by Emmanuel Macron – who is the 18th French president in Sister Andre’s lifetime – which he signed off with “Yours very respectfully”.
Most centenarians are found in the world’s so-called blue zones where people live longer than average: They are in Okinawa in Japan, on the Italian island of Sardinia, the Greek island of Ikaria, the Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica and in the Californian city of Loma Linda.
France, although no blue zone, was still home to the world’s oldest person with certified birth records, Jeanne Calment, who lived in Provence, dying in 1997 in Arles aged 122.
The man presumed to be the oldest in France also calls the south of the country home. Andre Boite is one of the very few male super-centenarians, a term defined as living beyond 110 years.

At 111, Boite still lives in his own home, likes wearing three-piece suits and stays away from reporters.
In 2015 there were half a million people over 100 in the world, with the UN saying this figure could grow to 25 million by the end of the century.
France alone has 30,000 centenarians compared with only 200 in 1950, according to statistics institute Insee, with some 40 of them 110 or older.
- ‘That’s not young’ -
Among them is Hermine Saubion who, when reminded of her age, says: “That’s old, that’s not young, I’m holding up.”
But when she wakes up from a nap in her wheelchair at the retirement home canteen in Banon, in the foothills of the Alps, her face lights up with a smile, and she looks attentively at her visitor.
Saubion, who is from Marseille and became a resident in the home two years ago, said she never expected that she and her sister Emilienne, who is 102, would live this long

Centenarians such as Sister Andre and Hermine Saubion often get by without pharmaceutical drugs, which is “probably one of the secrets of their longevity,” said Sister Andre’s doctor, Genevieve Haggai Driguez.
“Nothing can touch her”, the doctor said of Sister Andre, whose physical shape she calls “absolutely incredible”.
Sister Andre herself puts her resilience down to the fact that she got through the Spanish flu, a deadly wave of influenza in 1918, unharmed.
She may be on to something: Researchers have observed that people born before the Spanish flu have better resistance to Covid than those born later.
- ‘We’re waiting’ -
Nearby, in a retirement home in Valreas in Provence, lives Aline Blain, a 110-year-old retired teacher.
Known to be sometimes bossy and sometimes sweet, Blain likes to read Paris Match, a celebrity magazine.

She is among the lucky ones. Many people this old have nobody to share their life’s memories with, because most friends and family of their generation are already gone.
Their own death, meanwhile, rarely holds any taboos for the super-centenarians.
“We’re waiting. We’re waiting for the end, for death. It will come,” said Saubion.
Sister Andre even admits to a certain impatience. “To be alone all day with the pain is no fun,” she said, but: “God is not hearing me, he must be deaf.”

“Longevity goes hand-in-hand with material wealth, and with democracy, specifically social democracy,” said Jean-Marie Robine, a demographer and gerontologist at Inserm, a biomedical research institute.
Nutritional factors play a big role, he said, with the Japanese diet of fish and vegetables found to foster longevity, just like the vegetable-based Mediterranean diet.
“We’re not certain whether these diets are truly beneficial, but we have no doubt that others, such as French fries, charcuterie and cabbage are not that good,” he said.
- ‘Find great love’ -
While good genes play a part, healthy living seems to be fundamental for anybody hoping to grow this old.
“Jeanne Calment ticked all the boxes for longevity, her lifestyle was flawless,” said Catherine Levraud, head of the geriatric ward at Arles hospital. “She started smoking at 25, but just one little cigarillo per day, and a small glass of port in the evening. She avoided all excesses.”
Psychological factors, such as people’s general attitude towards life, are also crucial.

“We know that an optimistic outlook has a direct link to the mechanics of the immune system,” said Daniela S. Jopp, a professor for the psychology of aging at Lausanne university in Switzerland.
In her research into German and American centenarians, she found that they were often extroverts, charismatic, at ease in social situations, passionate about something, goal-oriented and able to find adaptation strategies when dealing with problems.
Perhaps there’s also another factor: Coquettishness.
Hermine Saubion always insists on pretty hairstyles, such as the two little buns she calls her “devil’s horns”, while Aline Blain demands dresses and matching cardigans.
And this is how Sister Andre sums up her formula for successful life: “Find great love and don’t compromise on your needs.”

Indonesia to buy French warplanes as Paris boosts Asia alliances

Jakarta (AFP) - Indonesia on Thursday ordered 42 Rafale fighter jets from France and may acquire two French submarines, as Paris and Jakarta seek to strengthen military ties in the face of growing tensions in the Asia-Pacific.
The Rafale agreement was announced as Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto met his French counterpart Florence Parly in Jakarta.
Subianto confirmed a deal had been struck for the purchase of the jets, with a contract signed Thursday relating to the first six.
France’s defence ministry said the contract for the 42 aircraft and their weapons was worth $8.1 billion (7.1 billion euros).
Spokesman Herve Grandjean said the two countries also signed a letter of intent for research and development with a view to Indonesia ordering two Scorpene submarines.
It is the latest sign of warming ties between Jakarta and Paris, as France rethinks its alliances in the region following the collapse in September of a multibillion-dollar Australian submarine deal.
Paris was left furious by the debacle, saying it had been given no warning that Canberra was negotiating a new defence pact with the United States and Britain.
Australia is now obtaining nuclear-powered submarines as part of the new defence alliance, named AUKUS, which brings together Canberra, Washington and London to counter a rising China.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Indonesia’s decision to choose “French industrial excellence”, writing on Twitter that the Rafale deal would “strengthen our partnerships”.
In November, France and Indonesia strengthened a strategic partnership agreement during a two-day visit by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to the vast Southeast Asian archipelago.
Indonesia’s first order for French warplanes comes as Jakarta replaces an ageing fleet – consisting mainly of American F-16s and Russian Sukhois – as concerns grow about rising US-China tensions in Asia.

In Jakarta, Parly told reporters that Indonesia had chosen a warplane known for its “technical excellence”, which had demonstrated its “operational capabilities on numerous occasions”.
Eric Trappier, CEO of manufacturer Dassault Aviation, said the contract “marks the start of a long-term partnership that will see Dassault Aviation rapidly step up its presence in the country.
“It also demonstrates the strong bond between Indonesia and France and reinforces the position of the world’s largest archipelago as a key power on the international stage.”
The president of ship and submarine manufacturer Naval Group, Pierre-Eric Pommellet, accompanied Parly in Jakarta and signed a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia’s PT Pal, according to a source within the French company.
The agreement included technology transfer, but “everything remains up for negotiation” regarding the Scorpene submarines, the source added.
Scorpenes are conventional diesel-electric attack submarines. They are capable of carrying 18 torpedoes and Exocet anti-ship missiles and navigating to a depth of 350 metres (1,148 feet), according to Naval Group.
Indonesia is also reportedly in negotiations to buy about 30 American F-15s, and is participating in a South Korean programme to develop a warplane.

Since the Australian submarine deal collapsed, France has been bolstering ties with long-time partners including Japan and India, as well as turning to Southeast Asian nations such as Indonesia.
Indonesia is one of several Asian countries that expressed concerns about the AUKUS pact, with Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi warning it could trigger a nuclear arms race in the region.
The Dassault Aviation Rafale aircraft, which entered service in 2004, has proved popular in the international market despite competition from American and other European manufacturers.
The United Arab Emirates signed the biggest ever order for the jets in December, with a deal to buy 80 for 14 billion euros.
Other foreign clients include Qatar, India, Egypt, Greece and Croatia.

Russia launches Belarus drills, heightening fears of Ukraine invasion

Russian war games in Belarus, set to run until February 20, are the latest point of contention between Moscow and the West over Ukraine
Moscow (AFP) - Russia and Belarus launched joint military drills Thursday that heightened tensions and added urgency to diplomatic efforts by NATO leaders to avert a feared invasion of Ukraine.
NATO said Russia’s deployment of troops and missiles represented a “dangerous moment” for European security, with fears building for weeks that Moscow was positioning more than 100,000 troops around Ukraine in preparation for an all-out assault.
Western leaders have been shuttling to Moscow for days in an effort to deflate tensions, giving Russia a chance to air its grievances about NATO’s expansion into eastern Europe and former Soviet states.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss took a tough message to Moscow on Thursday, accusing Russia of adopting a “threatening posture” and urging Moscow to withdraw its forces to prove it had no intention to invade Ukraine.
Kyiv denounced the war games – set to run until February 20 – as “psychological pressure” while French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian called the exercises “a very violent gesture”.

Russia has also sent six warship through the Bosphorus for naval drills on the Black Sea and the neighbouring Sea of Azov.

Moscow and Minsk have not disclosed how many troops are participating, but the United States has said some 30,000 soldiers were being dispatched to Belarus from locations including Russia’s Far East.

Russia’s defence ministry said the exercises would centre around “suppressing and repelling external aggression.”
Answering Western concerns, the Kremlin has insisted that the troops will go home after the exercises.
But Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said “the accumulation of forces at the border is psychological pressure from our neighbours”.
Kyiv has launched its own military drills expected to mirror Russia’s games, but officials have said little about them out of apparent fear of escalating tensions.

“We need to see the troops and the equipment stationed on the Ukrainian border moved elsewhere because at present it is in a very threatening posture,” Truss added.
Lavrov meanwhile said he was “disappointed” by the talks and said Western diplomats have either not understood or have ignored Russia’s concerns.
He said the drills in Belarus as well as the movement of troops across Russia’s own territory had spurred “incomprehensible alarm and quite strong emptions from our British counterparts and other Western representatives”.

Moscow’s chilly relations with London nearly ruptured after the 2018 poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England, which the UK blamed on the Kremlin.

Truss’s trip came just days after Macron conducted a round of shuttle diplomacy between Moscow and Kyiv, and then briefed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about his progress in Berlin.
The German chancellor will travel to Kyiv and Moscow next week for separate meetings with the Ukrainian and Russian leaders, including his first in person meeting with Putin.
The flurry of talks over Ukraine Thursday included a meeting between British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“The number of Russian forces is going up. The warning time for a possible attack is going down,” Stoltenberg said at press conference with Johnson.
“Renewed Russian aggression will lead to more NATO presence, not less,” he added.
Johnson was due later Thursday to meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw.
Throughout the crisis, Ukraine’s Western allies have stepped up supplies to Kyiv and the United States on Wednesday evening delivered its tenth ammunition shipment.
In Kyiv, officials have used more cautious language to describe the immediacy of the threat of the Russian build-up.
Deputy Defence Minister Ganna Malyar said Wednesday the forces on the frontier were being used primarily “for political pressure and blackmail”.
Fighting between Kyiv’s army and Russian-backed separatists who control parts of two breakaway regions has claimed more than 14,000 lives since breaking out in 2014.
It began weeks after Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula, sparking a wave of economic penalties from the West, which the United States and the European have said they will expand if Russia escalates again.
